Tyler Junior College’s School of Allied Health and Nursing offers a broad range of health care and nursing programs to its students. The U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that health care currently employs 11.3 million people nationwide. In fact, 13 of the top 25 careers requiring an associates degree or certificate are health careers, and 12 of the 30 occupations projected to grow the fastest during the next decade are in health care.

There has never been a better time to begin preparation for a rewarding career in health care. From Addiction Counseling to Vision Care Technology, the qualified faculty and staff of the Tyler Junior College School of Allied Health and Nursing stand ready to help you reach your goal as a health care professional.

Applied Studies - Business & Technology

The School of Applied Studies is designed to prepare students for technical and professional career fields upon completion of an Associate in Applied Science Degree. Some majors also offer Certificate of Proficiency options – study plans that last approximately one year. The School of Applied Studies includes programs designed to train individuals in specific career fields, such as surveying, computer information systems or automotive technology.

These programs are not specifically designed for transfer to upper-level colleges or universities. General studies or “core curriculum” courses taken as part of a required curriculum transfer to Texas public colleges and universities – by State law – and may transfer to private or out-of-state institutions. Depending upon the program and the institution selected, other courses may also be accepted for transfer. However, transfer of these credits to upper-level degree-granting institutions is not the intent of programs within The School of Applied Studies. Students studying in these programs who later decide to transfer to an upper-lever institution for completion of a bachelor’s degree should consult their academic advisor first.

College Preparatory Studies

The School of College Preparatory Studies is an intensive academy of courses and programs designed to provide development for students under prepared for college-level work. Assistance in basic skills such as reading, writing, mathematics and personal development is offered students identified for College Prep programs in both semester-length developmental courses and shorter term, individualized programs of study.

Continuing Studies

Tyler Junior College is committed to "lifelong learning" that goes beyond initial career preparation and traditional concepts of full-time study. The School Of Continuing Studies seeks to provide lifelong learning for people of all ages to develop personal and professional potential, upgrade job-related skills and prepare for informed participation in the civic, cultural and political life of the community.

Continuing Studies is devoted to offering critically needed training leading to immediate employment according to the needs of business, industry and governmental agencies. Instruction lends itself to quick startup training for workers to improve deficient basic academic skills in condensed block-time classes, rather than the traditional semester schedule.

University Studies

Through The School of University Studies, students planning to continue their education toward a baccalaureate or advanced degree may complete core curriculum courses designed to provide a sound background in the arts and sciences. The 44-46 hours of core curriculum courses are guaranteed to transfer and replace the first two year core requirements at all state-supported colleges and universities in Texas.

Departments within the School of University Studies also provide general education courses in support of students pursuing a technical or allied health degree.

Students selecting majors within The School of University Studies also benefit from consulting with an academic advisor. During the visit with their academic advisor, students will be able to develop a degree plan for their major that sets forth the classes required in the core curriculum as well as suggested specialization courses in their major field of interest. By visiting with their academic advisor on a regular basis, students are able to make sure they are taking courses that apply not only toward an Associate in Arts degree, but also transfer and apply to their intended baccalaureate degree.
