Academic Advising
Mission Statement: The mission of Academic Advising at Tyler Junior College is to enable academic success by assisting students in developing an educational plan compatible with their life goals, identifying campus resources, and providing guidance toward academic self-responsibility and completion of their academic goal, whether it is upgrading skills, graduation, transfer or entering an occupation.
Who needs to see an Academic Advisor?
After satisfying admission requirements, all students new to Tyler Junior College may be required to participate in a testing process if appropriate test scores are not on file. If required, testing must be completed prior to meeting with an Academic Advisor for proper placement into courses. For further information on your testing requirements please contact the Admissions Office, 903-510-2523.
Students must meet with an Academic Advisor before attempting to register IF they: are new to TJC or have earned less than 12 hours credit; have placement test scores indicating a need for College Preparatory coursework and non-TSI complete status; are on academic probation or suspension; or have less than a 2.0 GPA. Students who need to change their major or apply for graduation must also see an Advisor.
Students transferring into TJC are encouraged to see an advisor prior to registration. All other students are not required to see an advisor before registration, however, all students are welcome to see an Advisor at any time they have a need. Academic advisement includes interpretation of test scores; selection of a major field of study; discussion of suggested degree plans; course selection and interpretation of TJC course transferability. The advising process is a partnership with certain Student (Advisee) and Advisor responsibilities.
Academic Advisors assist students pursuing majors offered by three schools: the School of Applied Studies, the School of Allied Health & Nursing and the School of University Studies. Students are encouraged to identify a career interest or major interest and then consult the Academic Advisor for the School which most closely represents that interest. Advisors see students on a walk-in basis or by appointment. Please contact the appropriate Academic Advising office by telephone to find out the walk-in days that meet your needs or make an appointment with your Advisor. Students should consult with their Academic Advisor well in advance of online registration each semester to avoid possible advisement delays. Advising Process for:
