Returning Student Advising Process

In order to register for classes, the following are general registration procedures:

1. Meet with an academic advisor if you non-TSI complete (in college preparatory courses); have a GPA below 2.0; are on academic probation or suspension; need to change your major; or need assistance in course selection. If you are TSI complete with a GPA above 2.0 you are not required to see an advisor and may go ahead and register online after selecting your courses.

  • The advisor helps the student with the following:
    • Interpretation of test scores
    • Course selection
    • Degree Plan and transfer information
    • Information on campus resources
    • Selecting a Major
    • Information on the registration process

2.  Pick up a Registration Guide in the Registrar’s office in the White Administrative Services Center. (Schedules are generally available during mid-semester for the following semester).

3. Register online.

4. After registration, pay tuition and fees by the deadline, secure parking permit and student ID card.

Consider the following factors prior to registration:

  • Are you THEA liable? If so, have you taken the THEA?
    • If you have not taken the THEA, contact the Testing Center for options. Remember, unless a student is THEA Exempt or in a THEA Waived certificate program, he/she must take the THEA before registering at a Texas state public institution.
  • Are you knowledgeable of your Degree Plan? Have you chosen a major or changed your major?
    • In either case, you may choose to see an advisor for Degree Plan information; advisement on course selection; information and referral help with choosing or declaring a major; transfer information; graduation requirements; and other academic issues.
  • Are you on scholastic probation?
    • If so, you are required to see the Academic Advisor from your school. (Allied Health and Nursing; Applied Studies or University Studies) for assistance in course selections and information on study skills and tutorial resources. Be aware that, due to your GPA, you may be limited in the number of hours and type of courses for which you may enroll.
  • Do you plan to graduate this semester?  If so, then follow the steps below:
    • Plan to meet with an Academic Advisor in your major and/or school to confirm your graduation status.
    • If necessary, request course waivers and/or substitutions for specific degree plan requirements.
    • Apply for graduation by the published deadline. (See the College Catalog for dates.)
