Greeting to the Student:
Welcome to your study in chemistry.  I look forward to helping you discover the wonders of how the world around you functions.

Teaching Philosophy:
My students deserve the best opportunity to learn the subject matter that I, as their instructor, can provide to them.  I see my purpose in the classroom as being to direct and focus student learning, to explain difficult concepts, and to help students learn how to think through problems, thus developing their problem-solving skills.  I expect students to put forth a sufficient amount of effort to learn the concepts.  Accordingly, my expectations are as follows:

1. Pre-Class Study.  I assign reading assignments for each lesson, along with appropriate problems, that I expect the student to complete prior to the class period covering those concepts.
2. Conduct of the Lecture.
a. Lecture
(1) If the students make an earnest attempt to read the assignment and complete the problems, they will arrive at the classroom knowing “what they don't know.”
(2) In the lecture, I can then focus on the areas where the students are having problems.
b. Board Work.  I occasionally send the students to the boards to work problems associated with the major concepts of the lesson.
(1) The students learn the material best by doing them.
(2) As the students work the problems, I can observe and make corrections as they work and clear up misconceptions before they become ingrained mistakes.
3. Office Hours.
a. I try to make myself available to students as much time as possible when I am not in the classroom.
b. I encourage students who are having trouble to see me whenever they don't understand a concept after the lecture.

Method of Evaluation of Students:
Graded Work.  I ensure the students have frequent opportunities to do graded work.  This could be in the form of short daily quizzes, problem sets (4), major exams (4), and the final exam.

Professional Associations:

  • American Chemical Society
  • Military Officers of America Association

Personal Websites:

I will make extensive use of WebCT to post assignments, problem sets, and solutions to  text problems, daily quizzes, and problem sets.  Check it often.
