HOBET (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test)

The HOBET (Health Occupations Basic Entrance Test) Form A, version 9.6.2 is a comprehensive exam that evaluates the academic and social skills of new applicants to the Dental Hygiene program. This exam evaluates a student’s math, reading and writing skills, social interaction, stress level, learning style, critical thinking abilities and test taking skills. The composite score includes the math and reading scores. This score must be 60 or higher to be eligible to receive an application for the Dental Hygiene program. The writing section is scored separately and lists its own composite score. No minimum writing composite score is required, but application points are awarded for both scores.

MATH
The HOBET math section includes the following topics:

  • Whole Numbers Decimals
  • Fractions Percentages
  • Number Conversions
  • Algebra Equations

READING
The HOBET reading section is comprehensive and rates students’ critical thinking skills based on the following:

  • Inferential Reading
  • Main Idea of Passage
  • Predicting Outcomes

WRITING
Tests your ability to utilize grammar, capitalization, spelling skills, and organize your ideas into a written format. Your good grasp of the patterns and principles of basic written expression are essential processing skills for higher education.

Assessment areas: Sentence Structure; Basic Spelling Patterns; Nominative/Objective Case of Pronouns; Subject/Verb Agreement; Capitalization Rules; Fundamentals of Punctuation

WHEN AND WHERE CAN A STUDENT TAKE THE EXAM?
Tyler Junior College offers the HOBET exam in the Testing Center at Rogers Student Center. No appointment is necessary; testing is administered on a first come - first test basis. HOBET testing will not be administered prior to 3 hours before closing. Visit http://lumcontent.tjc.edu/testingcenter for testing hours. Permission to take the exam must be granted by an Allied Health and Nursing (AHN) advisor in room G222 based upon applicant readiness.

HOBET scores must be submitted to the Dental Hygiene office in T116 or by fax (903 510-2879) in order to obtain an application to the program. If scores cannot be located at the institution the student must request the scores be sent from Educational Resources, Inc. (ERI) by calling 1-800-292-2273; the cost is $20.00

HOW MUCH DOES THE HOBET COST AND WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE THE EXAM?
The cost of the exam is $30.00 for Tyler Junior College students. After the student obtains permission to take the exam from an AHN advisory, the student must pay for the exam and present a receipt to the Testing Center to complete the exam. Payment can be made at the Testing Center or the Cashier’s Office in White Administration Building. The Cashier will accept check, credit card, money order or cash payments. Along with receipt of payment, the student will need to present a photo ID.

Calculators may not be used during the exam!
