Barbara Bass, CPA
“Accounting and Taxes”

Barbara is a Certified Public Accountant and a Shareholder/Partner with Gollob, Morgan, Peddy & Co., Certified Public Accountants.  With over 25 years experience. Barbara’s primary areas of practice is in the areas of tax, accounting and consulting for small business owners.  Barbara is a graduate of Texas A & M University in Commerce with a BBA in Accounting.

Barbara has served in various leadership positions within the accounting profession at the local and state levels.  She has served in various capacities with a number of Tyler area civic organizations, such as:

Cherie Brown
“Business Record Keeping”

Cherie has over thirty years of experience in information management.  She is MOUS certified in Access, Excel, Power Point, Word, Project and Outlook.  She is HIPPA trained and is proficient in a variety medical, transportation and business applications.  Best of all Cherie continues to use her knowledge on a daily basis with Brookshire Grocery Company where she has been employed since 1971. When you combine the level of knowledge with the passion for instruction that Cherie brings each and every class, no student walks away disappointed.

Cherie has many years experience as an instructor with Tyler Junior College and with the School of Continuing Studies where she has taught a wide variety of computer based classes, as well as curriculum development for the school.

Cherie is a graduate of Tyler Junior College with Associate Degrees in Computer Science and Networking Technologies.  She is also a graduate of The University of Texas at Tyler with a Bachelor of Computer Science Degree.


Margie Earl, RS
“Successfully Managing a Food Service Businesses”

Margie recently retired to the Tyler area after a career spanning 25 years with the City of Dallas Health Department, in which, she held the position of Director for 19 years.  She holds licenses as Professional Sanitarian, Food Service Manager with the National Environment Health Association.  Margie has extensive work experience in all areas of food preparation related to public health.  Her experience includes not only food handling but also experience with the equipment utilized in a food services establishment. Her work in Dallas included responsibility for food services for The State Fair of Texas and The World Cup Soccer Tournament when it was held in Dallas.

Margie brings a wealth of knowledge in the food service industry and is a good resource for individuals desiring to start and be successful with their own food service business.  Margie works closely with the Northeast Texas Public Health District in order to provide students with the latest information related to the food service business.  Margie also works as a consultant to Tyler area restaurants assisting them with the requirements to successfully pass their restaurant inspections from the Health Department.

Margie attended Houston-Tillotson College from 1971-1974.


Allan F. Gardner, Attorney at Law
“Legal Issues for Businesses”

Allen is an associate with the legal firm of Potter-Minton, PC.  His practice focuses upon civil litigation, working for both Plaintiffs and Defendants.  He has represented clients in a wide variety of both private and business areas.  Although Allen has broad legal experience his focus for this class will be to provide guidance on the legal issues for starting and operating a small business in the State of Texas.

Allen is a graduate of Texas A & M University with a BBA degree.  He also holds a J.D., from Baylor University School of Law, Cum Laude.  While attending Baylor Allen was a member of the Baylor Law Review and was the recipient of several awards related to the legal profession.

Allen is licensed and Admitted to practice before a number of United States and Texas District Courts.


Robert Lewis, MBA
“Business Planning and Financial Analysis”

Robert has over 45 years of business experience with 38 years at a Fortune 500 company.  His background is in the areas of accounting, finance, business acquisitions and divestures and preparation operations analysis plans.  He also participated in a wide variety of assignments for senior management.  He retired in 2002 and came to work part-tine for the Small Business Development Center in November 2003 as Training Coordinator which includes planning and developing entrepreneurial seminars.  These seminars are part of Tyler Junior College’s School of Continuing Studies.  He also develops data bases local businesses and former students for marketing use by the SBDC and clients.

He is a native Texan and a 42 year resident of Tyler.  He holds a degree from Tyler Junior College and a BBA (Accounting) and Master of Business Administration degrees from The University of Texas at Tyler.


Tonya Page
“Insurance Issues for Small Businesses”

Tonya is a licensed insurance professional and owner of Page insurance Services.  She is licensed to sell and service Property and casualty Insurance, Life & health Insurance, and Securities.  Tonya came to the insurance industry with more than 20 years experience growing and managing small businesses.  She has a diverse background with experience in Operations, Human Resources and Technology.

Tonya received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Texas at Tyler.  Additionally, she completed the Computer Technology Program at Southern Methodist University earning the designation of Microsoft Certified System Engineer.

Tonya was honored in 2001 as a Texas Gold Star Agency and in 2002 she was named the Commercial Insurance Line Leader for East Texas by Allstate Insurance.  In 1996 she was recognized as the owner of one of Houston’s top 50 Women-owned Businesses by the Houston Business Journal. 

Tonya has the unique gift of explaining the various aspects of business insurance in a simple yet through manner.  She consistently receives positive evaluations from students who attend her class.
