Government

Government is the study of politics, or the study of “who get what, when and how” according to Thomas Dye.  Politics concerns the decision making and behavior of government, of voters, of elected officials and of employees of the various governments at different level.  GOV-2305 and 2306 fulfill the legislative requirement for study of the United States and Texas constitutions and governments.  GOV-2306 meets state teacher certification requirements for persons coming to Texas from out-of-state.  It is also the proper course for undergraduates who have/had one course in American government in another state.  GOV-2306 is transferable all over Texas and GOV-2305 is transferable to colleges and universities all over the United States.

What can I do with this degree?
Career options: In 2002, the Federal Government employed about 1.9 million civilian workers, or about 1.3 percent of the Nation’s workforce. Although the Federal Government employs workers in every major occupational group, workers are not employed in the same proportions in which they are employed throughout the economy as a whole. The analytical and technical nature of many government duties translates into a much higher proportion of professional, management, business, and financial occupations in the Federal Government, compared with most industries. Conversely, the Government sells very little, so it employs relatively few sales workers.

Even though most Federal departments and agencies are based in the Washington, DC, area, fewer than 15 percent of Federal employees worked in the vicinity of the Nation’s Capital in 2003. In addition to Federal employees working throughout the United States, about 3 percent are assigned overseas, mostly in embassies or defense installations.

Academic options: While this program is designed for direct employment, many of the courses can transfer to a four-year degree program.
