Austin Witherspoon Secretary, Student Senate Tyler Junior College | Austin's Bio:
Austin graduated from Pine Tree High School in Longview, Texas, where he was very active in his theatre department. His One Act Play cast qualified to the State 4A competition his junior year, and his senior year he qualified to the NFL (National Forensic League) National tournament held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Austin became an Eagle Scout in the summer of 2008 before attending TJC. He is majoring in Speech Communications and possibly seeking a minor in Spanish. Since the fall, Austin has become a member of the TJC forensic team, and travels all over Texas and occasionally out-of-state for public speaking tournaments. He also was recently inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the national community college honor society, and into Las Mascaras, the on-campus theatre fraternity at TJC. For the fall, Austin will be serving as co-captain of the TJC forensic team, and vice president of TJC’s National Forensic Chapter, as well as your Senate Executive President. Austin is a hard-working, down to Earth kind of person who puts others before himself. He strives for success and is extremely excited for the upcoming year! His plans after TJC include attending UT Austin, where he will continue his active role in Student Government. “As your president, I promise to not just write important things down, file paperwork, and do other boring tasks. I promise to be a real person that you can come to with any and all issues!”. | |  | |

Matt Oates Parliamentarian, Student Senate Tyler Junior College | Matt's Biography: Matt Oates attends Tyler Junior College, where a a History and Political Science major he has desires to run or work in political offices after attending a 4 year university with a focus in International Politics and Government. Being a single parent, the cost effectiveness of attending a community college drew him to Tyler Junior College where he chose to become involved in several student activities. He has a led the schools chapter of Applied Student Mechanics as President, recently gained the office of school Parliamentarian, Phi Theta Kappa Texas regional President and a member of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association Presidential Team. "After bouncing around for a few years, undecided what I wanted or could do with my life, TJC and these organizations helped show me what I could become, and I hold these offices with a desire to give them as much as they have me," Matt said. Matt grew up in a military and farm household. He credits many of his leadership skills and desire for service to the lessons he learn through that. He credits himself a nerd, loving science fiction, math and games of all sorts. He has been involved with theatre for years and always welcomes meeting new people or heading out for a new trip. | |  | |
